Design Your Own Art Project(s)

I create art for the ideas that bloom through the process and the sometimes unexpected outcomes of the artwork. A part of why I create it is to express emotions or moments in time to those around me. I want the people who see my art to open their minds and hearts to interpretation. I want to inspire and enlighten people to create their own form of art in whatever style they feel most drawn to. For me, my art resides in painting, graphic design, and photography. I believe art is wondrous and beautiful. It is at the very core of our world, carved into stone and painted over landscapes by the wind. Art is a universal language that anyone and everyone has the capacity to read and write because everyone has their own ways of taking it in and creating it.

Project Description:

For this design your own art project I chose to focus on creating some art by using my school's laser cutter. I did two sets of laser cuts one that translated photos into vector files to then engrave them into hardwood. The other set is of three coasters that I took mandala designs off google to translate those into vector files and then cut into colorful acrylic sheets. I'll layout the basic steps that I took for each of these projects below.

Images To Laser Cuts

Step 1: Choose which photo you want to have laser cut. Then remove the background online so that the only part of the photo you have left is the subject.

Step 2: Live trace the image in Inkscape and edit the nods until you are happy with how it looks. If the design is filled in it will look best engraved. If it's line art then scoring will be better. Export as an svg.
